Nutrition: Magnesium
Magnesium
Magnesium is an essential nutrient that is a co-factor in more than 300 metabolic reactions in the body. Benefits of adequate magnesium levels include improved bone health, protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood pressure regulation, blood sugar control and energy production. Magnesium also helps regulate mood, sleep, migraines, and a healthy heart rhythm. Vitamin D3 cannot be metabolized correctly without sufficient magnesium levels.
Therapeutically – magnesium is a critical component of recovery after a concussion. Concussions cause an increase in intracellular calcium levels which damage the cell membrane of brain cells, and can cause cell damage and death. Therapeutic doses of magnesium, is defined as one’s body weight times 4, which equals the number of milligrams of magnesium one should take per day. This dose of magnesium reduces concussion symptoms and supports brain tissue repair. As an aside – Omega 3’s and vitamin D3 with K2 – also help recovery from a concussion.
Research reveals that 50-60% of the population of the U.S. is magnesium deficient. The best way to dtermine whether you have adequate levels, or are deficient, is to have labs done.
The daily recommended dose for adult women is 320mg/day and for adult men is 420mg/day.
There are many forms of magnesium. The magnesium that I recommend – Metagenics Magnesium Glycinate is helpful with all the above mentioned conditions, and helpful for sleep and relaxation. Take 2-4 before bed, and sleep tight!
Research shows that a combination formula – which includes magnesium citrate, magnesium malate and magnesium glycinate and a low dose of zinc – provides all the benefits of magnesium listed in the last email.
Unfortunately – Metagenics does not have a combo like this available. The Magnesium Glycinate they have available provides most of the benefits of magnesium, and is the best form of magnesium for relaxation, sleep, and reducing anxiety. Remember to take this one at bedtime. The dose for this Metagenics product is 3 tablets for women and 4 for men.
Magnesium citrate is the best form of magnesium to help relieve constipation. Magnesium oxide is also used for constipation, but is not as easily absorbed, and therefore you need to take a higher dose – which can cause some side effects.
Magnesium malate is the other recommended form of magnesium. It is more useful in energy production, and muscle function. Magnesium malate is easily absorbed, and has been found to help reduce the pain of Fibromyalgia.
